A Sprinter L2 H2 for servicing lifting equipment

How can I get everything I need into my van and find it when needed?

The answer is simple and is demonstrated by over 100,000 van transformations since 1996. It can be summed up as follows: design a custom racking solution using modular elements and a logical storage system to keep everything in order and use all available space without waste and inefficiency.

The solution illustrated on this page proves the point, so let’s take a closer look!

A racking system for servicing lifting equipment in a Sprinter L2 H2

The racking solution we are going to analyse today is installed in a 2006 m/y Mercedes Sprinter L2 H2, a spacious van that is ideal for conversion into a mobile workshop.

The owner specialises in the maintenance and repair of lifting and moving equipment.

The racking system uses all three walls and is divided into clearly distinct areas:

left wall: the workshop area with plenty of storage for small parts, tools and equipment and a workbench with a wiring system for using power tools

right wall: the warehouse area with storage of various kinds, from small transparent containers to large shelves with lashing straps

bulkhead: racking that is easily accessible through the side door, with a dedicated space for carrying liquids and a compressed air hose reel for using pneumatic tools outside the van.

Never underestimate the importance of interior liners

There has never been a case in which we have advised against installing liners. On the contrary, we ALWAYS recommend fitting at least a minimum of protection to avoid the sort of damage that can prove costly in the long term and drastically reduce the value of your van when you come to sell it.

This Sprinter L2 H2 is fitted with a robust marble-look plywood floor liner with stainless-steel profiles at the doors. This liner forms a floor surface that is easy to clean and effectively hides dust and small blemishes. The panels on the walls and doors are made from galvanised and painted steel sheet. Only the bulkhead has been left without liners, since it is almost completely covered by racking.

The workshop area on the left of the Sprinter

On the left of the van, the Syncro team has created a work area for servicing lifting equipment and integrated it perfectly into the surrounding racking. The Sprinter’s work area consists of a marble-look plywood workbench with a raised rear edge, complete with a vice and an LED tube light underneath the container cabinet at the top of the wall.

Serving the work area and complementing the van’s warehouse area are:

  • three floor-level compartments, including two partially enclosed by Syncro’s patented lift-and-rotate doors, the rearmost housing the air tank for the Syncro compressor and the innermost housing the compressor itself, which integrates neatly into the racking thanks to mountings fixed to the side panels and vibration damping feet for quiet operation and reduced impact on the structure
  • a column of four patented trays for metal cases
  • a total of 10 metal drawers with non-slip mats and internal space dividers
  • three configurable shelves, one open and two enclosed by top-pivot doors
  • a vertical cabinet of eight compact tilting and removable transparent containers
  • horizontal cabinets with 23 tilting transparent containers

There are plenty of accessories on this side of the van too. The rear-facing side panel is fitted with a small cable holder and an electric cable reel. The reel is connected to the electrical panel at the top of the wall, which is equipped with industrial and Schuko power sockets and an on/off button.

The left rear door is equipped with a series of cleaning accessories: there is a handwash kit with tank and tap, a soap dispenser with a dedicated holder and a paper roll holder with a rain cover.

How 100% of the space on the right wall has been used

The entire right wall of this Sprinter has been fitted out as a warehouse area and consists of:

  • a floor-level compartment with a lift-up door
  • six metal drawers
  • two configurable shelves with hook and strap lashing systems at the front
  • three rows of pull-out transparent containers with internal dividers

A FORTIX fold-away bench with a second vice is fixed to the rear-facing side panel. This bench boasts a single-piece structure and incorporates a patented telescopic support that extends to the ground. The top of the bench is reinforced by a panel of marble-look plywood.

Drawers and shelves on the Sprinter’s bulkhead

The bulkhead serves as a third wall in this Sprinter, and has also been exploited to the full. The floor-level compartment is fitted with a sealed, stainless-steel tray for transporting cans of oil and other liquids. A grille in the bottom retains any drips and the entire tray can be removed easily for emptying and cleaning. Further up are eight metal drawers for small items, tools and spares, plus a shelf at the top, enclosed by a top-pivot door to maximise storage capacity.

The racking side panel accessible from the side door is equipped with a spray can rack, a compressed air hose reel and a first aid kit.
