CADDY, THE SMALL VAN FROM VOLKSWAGEN
The Caddy is Volkswagen’s offering in the small van segment. First introduced in 1980, the Caddy has been produced in various editions. The current series has remained substantially unchanged since 2006.
In terms of engine specifications, the Caddy sits firmly in the middle of its class. The shape of the body, however, is more rounded than on more recent models, which makes the load compartment slightly more difficult to exploit to the full.
Luckily, this does not stand in the way of installing Syncro System racking modules and converting the Caddy into a mobile workshop that responds perfectly to the needs of its operator.

RACKING FOR A PLUMBER’S CADDY
This page demonstrates how a Volkswagen Caddy was converted into a perfect mobile workshop for a customer who provides plumbing services.
The first step in the preparation of this travelling workshop was to protect the van’s bodywork against damage. The Syncro team installed a floor liner in 12 mm thick resinated plywood with non-slip stainless steel edging and recessed cups for the floor’s load anchors.
This liner not only protects the original metal floor but also provides a perfectly level surface for installing the racking.
The Caddy’s owner also requested galvanised and painted steel lining panels on the side and rear doors. The rest of the body is adequately protected by the racking itself and less likely to suffer damage.
Looking at the installation in greater detail, the racking along the Caddy's left side wall starts with an open cabinet for carrying the customer’s tool cases, complete with an automatic tool case locking shuttle.
Above this are three trays for component cases complete with three plastic component cases with clear lids and plastic containers inside. The transparent lids on these lightweight but robust cases make it easy to see what is inside, saving valuable time when looking for parts.
Alongside are three large metal drawers on ball bearing runners, with internal dividers and an automatic system for locking them shut.
Further up again are two shelves with non-slip mats and metal dividers.
Moving over to the right side wall, we find a wheel arch cover with Syncro’s patented, fully opening, lift-and-rotate door, the ideal solution for carrying tools and components even in this awkwardly shaped area of the van.
Above this is a set of transparent plastic drawers. These are a great way to carry large quantities of spares and other small items, which can be stowed away tidily and securely but remain visible at all times for instant identification. These drawers are made from PMMA, the same tough and long-lasting material used to produce aircraft windows.
Thanks to a total of 24 drawers, many fitted with internal dividers, the operator of this Caddy can carry dozens of different items in just 21 cm of useful space along one side of the van.
ACCESSORIES FOR AN EASIER LIFE
Last but not least, the Caddy is fitted with two items from Syncro’s vast range of accessories, chosen to improve productivity and make life on the road that much easier. In this case the Syncro team has fitted a fold-away support for a vice with special pipe jaws, plus a powerful but compact LED ceiling light that provides pleasant and effective illumination for the Caddy’s load compartment.
