A Fiorino with Syncro racking for a water mains company
FIORINO: THE GREAT LITTLE VAN FROM FIAT
The Fiat Fiorino created a whole new class of van back in 2007, when it was launched. This was the first time for a vehicle no bigger than a mid-range car to be fitted with a proper van body complete with a flat, low load floor, two large rear doors, an optional side door and a two-seat cab. The beautifully compact Fiorino proved ideal for tradesmen who needed to access tight urban spaces and for those who did not need to carry a great deal of cargo. Its square load compartment was generous in size considering the van’s compact dimensions and avoided all the pitfalls associated with van conversions based on passenger car models.
Obviously, the Syncro Group was never going to miss the opportunity to convert such a unique vehicle into a mobile workshop. Since 2007 the Syncro team has fitted literally thousands of Fiorinos with internal linings, racking, roof racks and accessories.
FACILITATING THE WORK OF INSTALLING AND SERVICING WATER MAINS
The photos on this page illustrate a Fiat Fiorino with a customised racking system for an integrated water mains service. The company concerned is responsible for supplying domestic water, distributing it to end users and collecting, treating and disposing of waste water. The company needs a van for the work of installing, upgrading and servicing mains water, drainage and sewage pipes.
The first thing to do when fitting out a van is to protect the walls and floor of the load compartment against the sort of damage that would otherwise inevitably occur during normal operations. The body of the Fiorino, like that of all other vans, comes without effective protection against impact from falling and moving cargo.
With this in mind, Syncro’s installers fitted a 12 mm thick, resinated plywood floor liner with stainless steel protective edging at the doors and recessed cups for the original cargo anchors. In addition to making the original floor far stronger, this liner also provides a perfectly level surface.
The walls were then protected with strong, galvanised and painted steel liners, cut by laser to ensure a perfect match for the Fiorino’s bodywork.
The racking on the left of the van starts with a wheel arch cabinet with a door that provides easy access to what has become a useful storage space.
Above this are steel drawers on telescopic runners, complete with non-slip mats, dividers, and an automatic system for holding them shut. To one side of the drawers are two shelves, again with dividers and mats. A full-length shelf forms the top of the racking.
Moving over to the right side, we find a wheel arch cabinet with a lift-and-rotate door at the bottom and three shelves with mats and dividers further up.
The Syncro catalogue contains an impressive number of accessories to make the work of van users easier, safer and more productive. The owners of this particular van chose to install a steel paper roll holder with a system to stop the paper unwinding and a cargo strap with tensioner. This robust strap has a load capacity of 4000 kg. and is ideal for securing gas cylinders and other heavy items.
At the end of the job, Syncro’s installers and the customer were more than happy with the results: the Fiorino had been transformed into a perfect mobile workshop for water mains work!
