Two small vans: very different solutions for the Custom and Caddy
A comparison of two compact vans with very different equipment
Today’s comparison is between two Syncro projects in vans of similar size, owned by companies in the same industry but used for different purposes.
The vehicle on the left is a Ford Custom L1 H1 owned by a laundry that uses it to collect and deliver clothes to customers’ homes before and after cleaning.
Priority: The van needed to be transformed into a large travelling wardrobe with provision for hanging jackets, shirts, trousers and dresses without them ending up in a pile on the floor at the end of the journey.
The van on the right is a Volkswagen Caddy L1 H1 used to service laundry equipment like washing machines, dryers and ironing machines.
Priority: This customer needed to carry tools, spares and materials for normal machine servicing operations, but also wanted plenty of floor space equipped for transporting bulky components or even whole machines to and from the workshop.
Both vans are compact models with limited loadspace, and both operate in the laundry sector. The needs, however, are totally different.
Liners: the key to effective protection
Understanding the importance of liners is crucial to ensuring an extended working life for your van. Some vans leave the factory with a sufficient level of protection already installed, but more often than not the installation of additional liners is necessary, or at least advisable.
The owner of the Custom chose not to install any additional protection. Since there is no racking as such in this van, however, he can do so easily at any time in the future.
Syncro tip: Fitting a plywood floor liner with a marble-look or rubber coating serves two purposes: it provides a flat, walkable surface and also protects the original floor against wear and tear from constant use. Rubber coated liners provide maximum grip.
The Caddy is equipped with a floor liner in marble-look plywood with steel anchor ring cups and edge profiles. The top section of the walls is protected by panels of honeycomb polypropylene.
Syncro tip: A bulkhead liner is always a good idea, as the bulkhead is otherwise exposed to dents and scratches during loading and unloading operations.
Racking vs free wall: Caddy vs Custom
As already noted, there is no racking in the Custom. The racking in the Caddy is confined to the left of the van and consists of:
- a universal case compartment with a lashing strap at the front and an overhead shuttle for maximum security
- three metal drawers with non-slip bottom mats and internal space dividers; each drawer extends for its full length and incorporates an automatic latching system
- three configurable shelves, including one at the top of the column
Neither van has any racking on the right side.
The Custom’s “special” equipment
The Custom for the laundry is equipped with an accessory specifically designed for transporting clothes: hanging garment bars.
Two Syncroblock slider bars at the top of the side walls support the ends of these bars. A spring mechanism in the ends allows the hanging garment bars to be moved and repositioned as needed in a matter of seconds. Each bar is equipped with strap and Velcro hanger retainers. Once fastened, these prevent coat hangers from sliding around or falling off the bar.
How to make the bulkhead area more functional
It takes very little to greatly enhance the functionality of the bulkhead area. The Syncro catalogue contains a vast range of cargo retaining and carrying accessories for this purpose.
In the case of the Caddy, all it took was the addition of a Syncroblock slider bar with hooks and straps to transform the bulkhead into a useful means of supporting and securing cargo that is too big to fit in the racking on the left wall.
