The photos on this page illustrate a special conversion for a very special customer. The medium-size van seen here was fitted out by Syncro System for a firm of undertakers. Everything about this van is special, from the liners to the raised floor, the coffin slide and the strategically located lashing systems. The van’s “special” lining system

One of the main requirements of any funeral service is to keep their vehicles immaculately clean at all times. The best way to do this is to line the interior with an easily washable and shiny looking material. So it’s no surprise that the customer chose aluminium chequer plate to cover the floor, rear bumpers, side walls, wheel arches, bulkhead and tailgate of this van. Only the wheel arch covers are made from steel sheet.

The van’s coffin slide

The most important accessory in this conversion is the coffin slide. Syncro System offers a wide range of slides for vans, but this particular type is specially designed for use with coffins. The rectangular frame is installed with its narrow ends towards the front and rear of the van. A roller on a fixed frame at the rear assists in loading the coffins into the van. A raised travel stop on the carriage stops the coffin striking the bulkhead. Safety and stability during transport are ensured by a mechanical locking mechanism.

A second floor and cargo retaining systems as part of the special conversion

Floor space in the undertakers’ van has been effectively doubled by installing a raised floor, supported by bars fixed half way up the side walls. This second floor is made from plywood with a marble-look surface and is fitted with protective profiles at the van’s doors. It forms a robust platform on which to carry cargo and equipment. To secure the cargo transported on the raised floor, both side walls have been fitted with bars, straps and sliding hooks with lock knobs.

custom-made steel brackets on the wall alongside the coffin slide, for carrying long objects like the telescopic rods seen in the photos
an LED ceiling light over the rear door, arranged facing the interior of the van
a metal drawer under the bulkhead, small enough to open in the limited space in front of the coffin slide.
