Getting the most out of your Master with a Syncro racking system

How to turn a medium size van into a great mobile workshop

Did you know that the space in your van can not only be fully exploited but even increased? With the right combination of racking, your van’s cargo compartment can be turned into a travelling warehouse with storage for plenty of different items thanks to a 100% use of the sides and bulkhead, in height and width. Without racking, the only surface available to you is the floor. Racking therefore dramatically increases usable space.

The photos on this page illustrate the smallest Renault Master, an L1 H1 version owned by an electrician who installs and services civil and industrial electrical systems. The customer asked us to install racking on both sides of the van but to leave the bulkhead free for cargo and bulky loads.

The importance of van liners: an essential addition to any commercial vehicle

With over 25 years of experience in van racking behind us, Syncro always recommends the installation of liners to protect at least some if not all the inside surfaces of a van. Why?

  • To extend the life of the bodywork and protect it against dents, scratches, perforation and water
  • To serve as a robust and uniform support for racking and accessories
  • To improve the appearance of the cargo compartment, making it brighter and easier to clean

The Master seen here has been fitted with the bare minimum of protection: just a plywood floor liner. The liner chosen by the customer has a brown resin surface but marble-look resin and rubber-coated surfaces are also available and give a more attractive look and a stronger surface. An aluminium tread plate liner is another alternative.

A variety of storage elements on the left of the Master

The racking on the left of this electrician’s Master is made up of two columns.

1. The column nearest the rear doors consists of a floor-level compartment partly enclosed by a door with Syncro’s patented lift-and-rotate hinge that opens to permit unrestricted access, three two-case trays and four metal drawers with non-slip mats and internal space dividers.

2. The second column, nearer the bulkhead, starts with a floor-level compartment containing a case transport kit comprising a section of slider bar at the rear, an end plate and a strap with a ratchet tensioner. Further up are three open configurable shelves and a fourth that is partly enclosed by a lift-and-rotate door.

The racking on this side is completed by a full-length top tray for carrying long objects.

A wall full of racking in the Master

The racking on the right of the Master occupies almost all the space available in height and width. At the bottom is a floor-level compartment over the wheel arch, fitted with Syncro’s patented lift-and-rotate door. Above this but under the rest of the racking Syncro has inserted a pull-out vice bench. Above this are five configurable shelves. Each of these shelves is fitted with space dividers and vibration-damping clips to stop them moving or rattling when the van is travelling.

Every aspect of this racking system is designed to help the user save time and money by keeping everything in perfect order. The door on the floor-level compartment, for example, turns the awkwardly shaped space around the wheel arch into practical storage. The dividers allow the user to arrange items by type and size, eliminating chaos and dramatically reducing the time needed to find things.

A hidden resource: the pull-out vice bench

The pull-out vice bench hidden between two levels of the right-side racking is a valuable resource for the van’s owner.

When closed, the bench occupies hardly any space, just the small part with the vice that extends from the racking.

When extended, the bench transforms into a generous and robust work surface that can be accessed from the ground outside the van. The bench is opened simply by releasing the two black locking levers and pulling it out. Around the slot through which the bench extends, the racking side panel is reinforced with aluminium chequer plate to prevent accidental damage and ensure an extended working life.
