THE THIRD GENERATION OF VOLKSWAGEN’S BIG VAN
The large Volkswagen Crafter van is now in its third generation. The latest model is actually the first to be manufactured directly by Volkswagen in a purpose-built factory in Poland, marking the end of a longstanding agreement with Mercedes.
The new Crafter is the most recent entry to the large van segment and offers the best engine, drive and chassis solutions available for this class of vehicle.
The cargo space is generous and practical, with no protrusions to reduce volume.
It is clear at first sight that the Crafter is ideal not only for transporting goods but also for installing Syncro System racking to convert the van into an efficient mobile workshop for making all kinds of installation and service jobs easier.
FITTING OUT THE CRAFTER TO SUIT THE NEEDS OF A VENTILATION SERVICE
The operator of the Crafter illustrated on this page specialises in installing and servicing ventilation systems, and needs plenty of space for carrying large system components as well as racking for keeping all his spare parts and tools in order.
As first step in the installation, the Syncro team fitted protective liners for the floor and walls of the cargo space. Like all vans, the Crafter comes without liners to protect the bodywork against damage by sliding and falling cargo. In the absence of sufficient protection, impacts can easily damage the body and lead to costly repairs. The Syncro team installed a birch plywood floor liner with a “marble-look” resin finish. This creates a perfectly flat, protrusion-free floor and also provides a solid base for the racking. The marble-look surface brightens up the inside of the van and is easy to clean too. The floor liner comes complete with metal cups for the cargo anchor rings and non-slip steel edging at the doors.
The wall lining panels are made from tough but lightweight honeycomb plastic, laser-cut to guarantee a perfect fit.
With the Crafter’s body suitably protected, the Syncro team went on to install the racking itself, concentrating on the right side wall over the wheel arch.
At the bottom we can see a wheel arch cabinet with a lift-and-rotate door that provides easy access and allows the space inside to be used to store materials or equipment.
Above this is a drawer cabinet with metal drawers on telescopic, ball bearing runners. The drawers themselves are fitted with automatic mechanisms for keeping them shut with a practical release mechanism in the recessed handle, non-slip mats and internal space dividers.
To the side of the drawer cabinet we find another storage compartment with a lift-and-rotate door.
Further up is a sloping shelf for cases, designed to carry either tool or component cases, and another shelf, again with mat and dividers, to the side.
Next up is a large shelf with a gas-spring action door.
At the top of the racking are two metal cabinets with tilting, transparent containers, a solution that offers safe, orderly, constantly visible and easily accessible storage for large quantities of small and medium size parts. Syncro’s transparent containers are extremely robust thanks to top quality material (as used in aircraft windows) and an innovative design. They incorporate an automatic closing button and have no protruding parts.
The Syncro catalogue offers a large number of accessories, and the company that owns this Crafter chose to fit a first aid case and two compact but powerful LED ceiling lights to illuminate the van’s large interior.
Finally, to retain bulky cargo safely, the customer asked Syncro to fit three aluminium rails with adjustable straps plus, to avoid damaging cargo carried at the bulkhead, another two steel cargo rails with non-scratch rubber profiles.
