2023 Custom vans for refrigeration and boiler technicians

Two racking solutions with fully customised workspaces in the 2023 Ford Custom L1 H1

Thanks to the versatility of Syncro racking, the 2023 Ford Custom L1 H1, like all other vans, can be configured in an endless variety of ways. This can be seen clearly from a comparison of two racking systems that use available space in quite different ways.

The racking system on the left was chosen by a customer who installs and services industrial refrigeration systems. The columns extend up to roof of the van, offering storage that exploits all available vertical space. The system on the right was designed for a boiler service engineer and uses lower racking, prioritising rapid, easy access and a clear view of the load space. Both systems are strategically laid out to suit the customers’ needs and to help them work more efficiently.

Let’s compare them in detail.

The first step: lining the interior of the 2023 Custom

If we were to draw up a list of priorities for the design and installation of van racking systems, the first item on it would certainly be the installation of interior liners in the cargo compartment.

Liners protect, prevent and save money!

Syncro System’s liner recommendations were eagerly adopted in both the 2023 Ford Customs seen on this page. The interiors are almost fully lined with protective panels, with few areas excluded and special solutions adopted in both cases!

The original floors are covered by identical marble-look plywood floor liners. The same material also protects the bulkheads, though it stops at mid-height in the van on the left while extending up to the roof in the one on the right.

The walls and doors of both vans are lined in super-strong steel panels.

Worth noting!➡ Both owners chose the van variant with a small door at the bottom of the bulkhead, providing access to a storage compartment that extends under the passenger seat. Though a minor detail, this choice is nevertheless important as it permits the transport of objects longer than the actual cargo compartment. The liner installed by Syncro System allows this door to be opened whenever needed.

The key differences between the two Customs

Metal drawers, shelves, floor-level compartments and a strap-type case compartment are the elements that comprise the simple racking on the left of both Customs. The small differences between the two configurations, however, are important in achieving the functionality desired and expected by the two van users.

Floor-level compartments: The rearmost compartments in both vans are enclosed by doors, but the type used in the van on the left is a lift-and-rotate type that folds down to give unrestricted access while that in the van on the right is a door that opens upwards parallel to the racking above.

➡The first type prioritises easy access to the compartment inside while the second type leaves the centre of the van unobstructed when open.

Drawers and shelves: The Custom on the left has a stack of three drawers of different sizes, the rest of the space being occupied by six configurable shelves. The van on the right has only two drawers with four configurable shelves, and a plain shelf enclosed by a top-pivot door.

➡In designing these different combinations, both customers based their choices on the quantity and type of tools, spares and sundries they need to carry, and on the need to provide a convenient place for everything.

Two different ways to configure the Custom’s right wall

The configurations on the right of the two Customs are more clearly differentiated.

Custom on the left: The floor-level compartment on this side is partially enclosed by a lift-and-rotate door. Above this are three metal drawers with non-slip mats and two configurable shelves.

Custom on the right: In this van, the floor-level compartment is enclosed by a lift-up door. A pull-out vice bench is sandwiched between the bottom compartment and the racking above. The configuration also includes three metal drawers and three trays for cases. A configurable shelf closes the column at the top.

Secure and practical cargo retention on the bulkhead

The bulkheads of both Ford Customs are equipped with cargo lashing accessories. However, this goal has been achieved is slightly different ways in the two vans.

Custom on the left: Two Airline profile SyncroRails with lashing straps and sliding attachments are installed, one at mid-height and one at the bottom.

Custom on the right: Two versatile SyncroBlock bars with sliding fittings are installed in the same positions. While the top bar extends for the full length of the bulkhead, the bottom one only covers the area near the sliding door.

Different accessories, different purposes

From the vast range of Syncro van accessories, the two van users chose the following items.

Custom on the left: The left rear door is fitted with a SyncroBlock bar with two adjustable telescopic hooks along with hooks and straps for carrying a lightweight folding ladder. The racking side panels are equipped with four SyncroBlock bars with straps and movable attachments at the rear and a cable holder at the front. Milled rails are recessed into the floor liner for use with additional hooks and cargo lashing straps.

Custom on the right: A grille is installed at the top of the left rear door to improve air circulation inside the van. A paper roll holder and a cable holder are installed on the racking side panels.
