Not just builders but all construction-related businesses need vans, as their work is always done on site away from base. The construction industry requires a ready supply of tools, equipment, spares and consumables to complete each day’s work without stoppages and delays.
The 2014 Ford Transit L2 H2 seen on this page is owned by a company that installs and services machinery and equipment for the construction sector. The customer expressly asked Syncro System to install shelves on both sides of the van and to create a work bench that could be used from outside. Let’s take a look at the solution devised and installed by Syncro.
Before examining the racking as such, let’s do things in the right order, just like all Syncro System racking centres. Let’s start with the liners, which are needed to protect the van’s original bodywork against dents and scratches and that have to be installed before the racking and accessories.
In this Ford Transit for a building machinery service, the floor is protected by a marble-look plywood floor liner. The plywood base is incredibly strong, being formed from multiple plies of birch wood held together by phenolic adhesive. This type of plywood is also used to make boats and is totally resistant to damp. The marble-look surface offers an excellent grip and is very easy to clean too.
The side walls and the top section of the doors are lined with steel panels whose key characteristic is strength. Even in a violent collision, racking attached to these panels remains in place, protecting the van’s original walls, the contents of drawers, lockers and shelves, the van’s passengers and other road users.
Every Syncro racking system is fully customised to meet the needs of the user. Racking may therefore consist of different types of storage or, as in this case, only of shelves, arranged to make full use of all available space. This Transit L2 H2 owned by a building machinery service has 17 shelves, with 12 arranged in two columns along the left wall and the other seven in a column on the right wall.
All the shelves in this van are “configurable”: they come with a non-slip mat in the bottom and space dividers that can be positioned to form separate compartments for a more efficient organisation.
In addition to the shelves, the van also features floor-level compartments. The two located over the wheel arches have been turned into practical storage by the addition of bottom profiles at the front. The compartment nearest the bulkhead has been fitted with hooks and straps to keep cargo inside.
The shelf at the top of the right-side racking differs from the others, being specially designed to carry removable plastic containers.
This Ford Transit for a building machinery service features a special solution requested by the customer: a robust work bench standing on a cabinet of five metal drawers. It’s position makes this unit unique. The work bench is arranged facing outwards from the van’s sliding side door. It also features raised side and rear edges to stop material falling off inside the van. The drawers too open towards the outside of the vehicle. The bench and drawers are obviously designed to be used from the ground.
The choice and arrangement of accessories in a van is an important detail that can make a really big difference to efficiency. The main requirement is obviously that accessories must satisfy the needs of the van user!
