A Ford Transit L3 H3 for a council maintenance service

A spectacular transformation: a Transit L3 H3 for a council maintenance service

A fully customised racking system can transform a van’s functionality and appearance spectacularly.

Just imagine this Ford Transit L3 H3 before its “pit stop” at Syncro System. It began life as a normal, large van, with plenty of potential but of virtually no use because it was completely empty and unprotected.

The vehicle was purchased by the council of a small town to take on the installation and maintenance jobs of its public works department. The van could not be used as it was. The result would have been an untidy mess of tools, spares and tables, all piled together in the back, with obvious safety issues for operators.

Luckily, that didn’t happen because the department’s managers sent the van to Syncro System. Let’s see what came out of the visit!

The first step: interior liners

Every van that has to work for its living needs bodywork protection as a bare minimum. With robust liners fitted, you can confidently install whatever racking and accessories you need, knowing you have done everything possible to protect the walls, floors and doors against preventable damage.

This Ford Transit L3 H3 for a council maintenance service boasts an almost complete set of interior liners. The floor is protected by a floor liner made from aluminium tread plate and the same material has been used to cover the bulkhead. The panels match the contours of the bodywork, adapting to any protrusions at the bottom and to the changes in shape. The walls and upper sections of the doors are covered with steel panels. This extremely strong material prevents damage even in the event of sudden braking or collision.

On request, Syncro can also line the roof and wheel arches. Enclosing the latter is generally recommended if they are not at least partly protected by racking.

Storage and work area: everything necessary on the left of the Transit

In addition to the work area, nearly all the racking in this Transit is found on the left side, which is fully occupied in length and height.

Storage:

  • The floor-level compartment at the back of the van is partially enclosed by one of Syncro’s patented lift-and-rotate doors while that at the front is equipped with a strap-type case transport kit.
  • Also present are three long configurable shelves and another three small ones. All these shelves come with non-slip mats and metal space dividers.
  • Four two-case shelves accommodate a total of eight metal cases for tools and spare parts.
  • A specially adapted open shelf holds seven removable plastic containers.
  • Two metal drawers serve the workbench.

Work area:

  • The workbench installed near the rear doors is made from a sturdy panel of marble-look plywood with a raised edge at the rear.
  • A second work surface is provided by a fold-away vice bench, complete with a patented telescopic support and a metal vice.
  • The racking is completed by a full-length top tray with an easy-to-open access door at the rear for retrieving contents.

The side wall over the work bench is equipped with a practical tool rack panel with holes for hooks.

The right of the Transit: free but functional

Filling a van with racking is not necessarily the best solution.

If you frequently need to carry bulky wheeled machinery or equipment – as is the case with this Ford Transit – it’s essential to have plenty of free floor space!

This explains why 90% of the right side has been left completely free. Only two Syncroblock bars have been installed to secure cargo using hook and strap lashing systems, along with a shelf right at the top of the wall.

An access ramp: indispensable for loading wheeled machinery and equipment

Once you have identified the space needed to transport bulky equipment, the next have step is to work out how to load it.

The ideal solution is an access ramp. This van is equipped with a removable, lightweight ramp that is easy to install and ensures fatigue-free loading and unloading without risk to operators.

The importance of autonomy at work

In the workshop area, a cable reel has been fitted to ensure that a source of electrical energy is always readily available. Power, in this case, comes from a generator mounted on a slide next to the bulkhead.

If customers express a requirement for an autonomous energy supply for use in roadside assistance or off-site jobs, Syncro can offer a choice solutions to meet their needs. The Syncro catalogue includes total autonomy solutions like Ecoflow power stations that can even be recharged by photovoltaic panels mounted on the roof.

Syncro can also install safe wiring systems to feed electrical panels like the one located to one side of the work bench in this Transit, which incorporates Schuko sockets, industrial sockets and circuit breakers to provide and control current.

More accessories for the Ford Transit

A mobile workshop worth its salt must have its own set of accessories.

This Ford Transit is equipped with:

  • cleaning accessories: a handwash kit with water tank and tap and a soap dispenser on the left rear door, and a paper roll holder on the bulkhead
  • cargo retaining accessories: three metal storage pockets on the rears doors and two bar racks with metal flange and strap on the bulkhead four Airline profiles in the racking for securing cargo with lashing straps
  • lighting accessories: three LED tube lights on the roof cross-members to illuminate the loadspace and a flashing beacon on the roof for warning other road users of the vehicle’s presence
  • a first aid kit on the bulkhead.
