A Mercedes Sprinter for transporting trials bikes

Not just work: Syncro installs equipment for leisure too!

Who says that vans are only useful for work? Many Syncro System customers use their vans to enjoy their leisure time and hobbies. These van users are typically enthusiasts of motorcycles, bicycles, quads or other forms of transport that require maintenance and – more importantly – transport to the starting point of races or practice circuits.

Syncro System’s racking experts can design and install perfectly functional solutions for leisure and sport activities, even incorporating special or adapted parts.

The photos on this page illustrate a Mercedes Sprinter L3 H2 with equipment for a customer who competes in motorcycle trials. The vehicle is a Combi variant with a large six-seat cab and a slightly shorter body delimited by a bulkhead with a recessed central space.

Let’s take a closer look at how Syncro organised the loadspace, and take a peek inside the cab too!

Protection for the Sprinter: Syncro can supplement existing liners

Vans sometimes come to our racking workshops with elements of lining already installed. The Sprinter seen on this page was already equipped with a wood floor liner with a steel edge profile at the rear doors. Syncro’s installers inserted a length of milled rail along the centreline of this liner.

The walls, doors and bulkhead were then covered in Syncro’s own painted steel panelling. The van’s owner decided to enclose the wheel arches too, as they would otherwise have been exposed to dents and scratches during motorcycle loading and unloading operations. The wheel arch liners are made of two materials: marble-look plywood for the vertical panel, aluminised steel for the surround.

How space is organised in the Sprinter: minimum bulk, maximum efficiency

The equipment installed by Syncro in the van’s cargo compartment leaves maximum space for motorcycle storage. Exploiting the design of the vehicle’s interior, the only column of racking that starts at floor level is neatly recessed inside the bulkhead while the elements on the van’s sides are fixed to the top of the walls.

Side racking: a small parts store and plenty of space for securing bikes

The bottom of the walls is completely free, except for cargo lashing accessories. Two lengths of Syncroblock bar have been fixed to both sides, the first just above the wheel arch, the second a bit higher up. These bars are equipped with hooks and straps for use in lashing down the trials motorcycles. The milled rail recessed into the middle of the floor serves the same purpose and can be used to attach the other end of the lashing straps.

Suspended racking elements have been installed at the top of both side walls:

  • on the left, a full-length top tray with an asymmetrical door at the rear and ventilation holes in the bottom – perfect for carrying long objects!
  • On the right, two shelves enclosed by Syncro’s easy access, patented lift-and-rotate doors, with non-slip bottom mats and provision for internal space dividers.

Multi-purpose racking on the bulkhead!

The compact racking unit safely recessed into the bulkhead performs a number of functions. Its key feature is the work bench with metal vice at mid-height. This is served by three drawers underneath, a Multibox cabinet of tilting and removable transparent containers above, and a plywood shelf with raised edge at the very top. The floor-level compartment has been left open for convenient storage.

The workshop area formed in this way is illuminated by an LED tube light fixed to the underside of the shelf and is also equipped with a multi-socket connected to an Ecoflow power station in the driver’s cab.

(Particularly) useful accessories in the Sprinter

In addition to the accessories already mentioned, the back of this Sprinter for trials motorcycles is equipped with LED tube lights arranged at 45° on the roof cross-members and, more importantly still, two motorcycle clamps.

These clamps use specially designed wheel grips to lock a motorcycle by means of its front wheel without having to use the bike’s own stand. The clamps open and close automatically and are particularly practical in confined spaces. To make sure the motorcycle is 100% secure, lashing straps can be attached to the milled rail in the floor or to the bars on the sides of the van.

What about the cab?

The work of the Syncro team even extended to the cab of this Sprinter: a custom-made frame with support has been installed at the rear of the access step. This holds an Ecoflow Delta 2 power station connected to a 800W Alternator Charger with a Smart Cooling Deck fan.

At the top of the same wall panel we can see a small Syncroblock bar with three clothes hooks.
