A comparison between a Sprinter and a Vito with racking for servicing waste processing machines

It often happens that companies form build up commercial vehicle fleets from vehicles of very different shape and size. This is certainly the case here. The photos on this page compare Syncro racking solutions in a Mercedes Sprinter L2 H2 (left) and a Mercedes Vito L2 H1 (right). Both vehicles are owned by a company that installs waste processing machinery. The vans are used not just at the installation stage but for subsequent servicing too.

The two vans are quite different in volume and proportions. The Sprinter boasts a large, tall cargo compartment while that of the Vito is much smaller. The first will be used for more demanding jobs that require greater technical resources while the second will be the preferred option for quick jobs that do not need a great deal of on-site work. Let’s take a look at the solutions put in place by Syncro’s racking experts.

The liners of the Sprinter and Vito

Let’s start with the liners.

  • Both vans have floor liners in marble-look plywood with protective metal profiles edges at the doors.
  • The two sides and the lower section of the rear doors in the Sprinter are protected by steel panelling.
  • In the Vito on the other hand, the entire surface of the rear doors is covered by steel panelling while only the bottom half of the exposed section of side wall is protected with the same material.
  • The owners chose not to line the bulkhead on either van.

The left side: how height determines the best configuration

The most obvious difference between the Sprinter and the Vito lies in their height. The space available along the sides of the Sprinter is clearly much greater and offers far more options for installing racking.

The racking in the Sprinter occupies the entire left side, in width and height, and includes:

  • two floor-level compartments, the first partly enclosed by a front profile
  • a secure locker the inside of which can be configured as needed
  • 12 drawers with non-slip mats and either space dividers or plastic trays
  • 12 case trays with Syncro’s patented retention mechanism
  • six configurable shelves, including two at the top of the columns
  • a shelf with a top-pivot door
  • 12 Multibox pull-out transparent containers, each with internal dividers to keep contents separate and tidy
  • Multibox cabinets with another 18 tilting and removable transparent containers on the rear-facing side panel, accessible from the ground.

The racking in the Vito is divided into two columns. That closest to the rear doors extends from the floor to the roof, while that on the inside consists only of an open shelf and a configurable shelf at the top, leaving a large space free for cargo on the floor. The full-height section consists of a floor-level compartment with a lift-up door, eight drawers and a top shelf with one of Syncro’s patented lift-and-rotate doors. A pull-out vice bench complete with metal vice is fitted between the floor-level compartment and the drawers.

The right side: Sprinter vs Vito, sacrifice or choice?

Installing a workbench along the side of your van inevitably means doing without a certain amount of storage space, but provided the racking reflects your real needs, this is a matter of choice and not a sacrifice. The question should always be always decided by weighing the benefits of a proper workspace against those of keeping all your materials in order. Clearly, the decision is easier in the case of a large van.

  • In the Sprinter, the right-side racking extends only halfway up the wall and consists of a floor-level compartment, four metal drawers and four case trays. These elements support a large marble-look plywood workbench with raised sides and rear. The top of the wall is occupied by Multibox cabinets with 20 tilting transparent containers while the racking side panel at the rear doors is fitted with a fold-away vice bench with integrated support.
  • The right wall in the Vito is dedicated entirely to storage, with a floor-level compartment with a lift-up door, eight metal drawers and 15 pull-out transparent containers.

A closer look: optimising large spaces to meet your needs

As stated above, though the racking of the right of the Sprinter offers ample opportunities for storage, it also provides a convenient workbench. Part of this work surface is taken up by an Ecoflow power station from which a cable runs over the side door to a lamp that illuminates the access and to a power socket on the right of the bulkhead. Ecoflow units combine a battery, battery charger and inverter. This one is installed in a metal tray and held in place by a strap with a ratchet tensioner.

The space taken up by the Ecoflow is compensated for by Multibox cabinets fixed to the forward-facing side panel, containing three large and six small transparent containers.

The bulkhead plays an important part too!

Don’t forget the bulkhead! This not only closes off the back of the cab but also provides extremely functional storage space thanks to its proximity to the side door and its strategic position at the end of the central corridor.

The bulkhead in the Sprinter has been used to house three long drawers that open through the side door. It is also equipped with a length of Syncroblock bar, an extremely popular accessory with Syncro customers.

In the Vito, the bulkhead is fitted only with a Syncroblock slider bar with hooks and lashing straps.

Essential accessories for cargo retention, cleaning and more
