A comparison of two Sprinter racking systems

Mercedes Sprinter L2H2: a large van with an infinite potential for racking

Syncro System has accumulated unrivalled experience over thirty years of specialisation in van racking. Each of the 90,000 plus vans we have transformed between 1996 and 2023 was customised to suit the make and model and the needs of the owner.

This means that the same vehicle can be fitted out in very different ways depending on the requirements expressed. On this page, for example, we can see two quite different racking solutions in Mercedes Sprinter L2H2 vans. From a quick glance, you could easily think they are two different vans! To find out more, let’s take a look at the details.

Bodywork protection: minimal or complete, it must be there!

The choice of liners for these two Sprinters was very different. In one case, only the bare minimum of protection was fitted, covering the floor and one wheel arch. In the other, a virtually complete set of liners was installed.

What is certain is that some form of bodywork protection is essential if you want to avoid dents, scratches and eventually rust.

Looking at the first Sprinter, we can see that the floor is protected by a marble-look plywood floor liner with aluminium edge profiles and cups for the anchor rings.Tough but lightweight aluminium panels have been fitted to the walls and doors. The second Sprinter stands out for the wheel arch liner consisting of a side panel in aluminium chequer plate and a top cover in aluminised steel.

The left of the Sprinter: minimum volume, maximum functionality from Syncro

Sprinter no.1: The left side of this van is fitted out as its storage area, with two columns of racking of different depth. The column nearest the rear doors consists of a floor-level compartment, two shelves including one enclosed by a lift-up door and a number of cabinets of tilting and pull-out transparent containers (20 in all, with the shallowest at the top).

The second column houses a compressor-generator combo at floor level, along with a number of metal drawers, two single case trays and an enclosed shelf at the top.

Sprinter no.2: In this case the rear half of the left wall has been left free. The racking is concentrated near the bulkhead and is made up of a shuttle-type case compartment at floor level, two metal drawers with non-slip mats and internal space dividers, two configurable shelves, two shelves with adapters for a total of eight removable, blue plastic containers, two rows of pull-out transparent plastic containers with Syncro’s patented automatic retaining mechanism and, finally, a top shelf.

The right of the Sprinter: perfect order and space saving guaranteed

Sprinter no.1: The right of this Sprinter for installing fire prevention systems has been left free apart from cargo retaining accessories: a telescopic hook and a cable holder at the top and, lower down, a second small hook with a lashing strap and two lengths of Syncroblock slider bar with more hooks and straps. An electric control panel with power points for electrical equipment has been installed where it is easily accessible from the rear doors.

Sprinter no.2: In the plumber’s Sprinter, the right wall is home to a column of shelves: two plain, installed with their flanges facing up, and three configurable. The addition of a lift-and-rotate door has turned the floor-level compartment into a practical storage area.

What about the bulkhead?

The van’s bulkhead is often left free of racking and instead fitted with retaining accessories to improve functionality in terms of cargo carrying. This is exactly what the owner of Sprinter no.2 chose to do, opting to fit two sections of Syncroblock slider bar and a set of hooks and lashing straps. The owner of Sprinter no.2, on the other hand, chose to install more racking on the bulkhead. This configuration is quite unique. It consists of a floor-level compartment with a door, a top shelf, a pull-out bench with a metal vice and four shelves in 2 mm thick, stainless-steel, installed on a slope. Used in conjunction with a high-pressure shuttle, sloping shelves are ideal for securing heavy items like fire extinguishers, etc. quickly and easily.

Accessories

Accessories allow you to work more professionally in all situations. Thanks to the flexibility of Syncro racking, accessories can be fitted either to the bodywork liners or to the racking side panels. In many cases, accessories can even be added at a later date and moved to new positions by the van’s owner as and when needed.

Syncro supplies a vast range of accessories. Sprinter no.1 has had cleaning accessories fitted to the left rear door: a handwash kit with water tank and tap, a liquid soap dispenser and a paper roll holder. Both vehicles have been equipped with lighting accessories: LED ceiling lights on the roof cross-members of both Sprinters and an external LED light over the rear doors of Sprinter no.1. Syncro also supplies ventilation accessories like grilles and extractors for air exchange inside the van, and cargo retaining accessories for the safe transport of goods and materials of all shapes and sizes.
