A Sprinter with racking for a door and window fitter

A Mercedes Sprinter transformation for a door and window service

The Mercedes Sprinter is a large van with a regularly shaped cargo compartment that is perfect for conversion into a mobile workshop. The owner of the vehicle seen here is a door and window fitter. We were asked to design a racking system with everything needed to satisfy the following needs:

  • plenty of carrying capacity for all the fasteners, equipment and spares needed to work on site
  • the ability to perform all the jobs likely to be needed when working on site
  • complete energy autonomy
  • maximum safety

Let’s see how the Syncro team managed to satisfy all these needs in this fully customised Mercedes Sprinter transformation.

A complete set of liners for the Sprinter

Particular attention was paid to bodywork protection in this Mercedes Sprinter. The floor, walls and doors are fully lined.

A floor liner in marble-look birch plywood was fitted to extend the working life of the vehicle and to level out the ridges and channels of the original floor, which would otherwise lead to uneven weight distribution. Syncro floor liners also stand out for the presence of stainless-steel edge profiles and anchor ring cups to keep damp and humidity out. The van’s doors and walls were protected by custom-made, painted steel panels. This material is both attractive and extremely strong and is quite able to withstand even violent impacts caused by fierce braking or collisions.

A mobile door and window warehouse on the left of the Sprinter

The left of this Mercedes Sprinter for a door and window fitter has been transformed into a mobile stores for spares, fasteners and tools. The various storage elements installed include:

1. A floor-level compartment with a door that opens to provide almost unrestricted access to the interior and that securely encloses the space for improved safety on the road.

2. A set of trays containing metal tool and component cases and a column of metal drawers with non-slip mats and space dividers inside. Both these products open to their full length thanks to strong, ball-bearing mounted runners, and feature automatic latches to hold them shut.

3. A specially shaped shelf of removable plastic containers.

4. A set of Multibox cabinets holding a total of 18 pull-out transparent containers: the toughest and longest lasting product of its kind on the market. Syncro containers are made from PMMA and do not warp, turn yellow or crack.

5. An open shelf of Euronorm containers, located at the top of the van near the bulkhead, complete with hooks and straps for maximum safety.

A fully autonomous power supply? No problem with Syncro System

Professionals who work on site often need an autonomous supply of electrical power and compressed air when no mains supplies are on hand. This van boasts a powerful compressor-generator combo installed in a floor-level compartment at the front of the cargo compartment. This machine feeds an electrical cable reel and an air hose reel at the top of the bulkhead near the sliding door. A professional cabling system with a multi-socket just above a shelf allows electrically powered devices to be used practically and safely.

Storage and cargo retaining accessories on the right of the Sprinter

The right side of the Sprinter provides even more storage capacity, configured for different purposes. The floor-level compartment is identical to that opposite and ideal for carrying plastic bottles and cans thanks to the door at the front. Above this is a sealed, stainless-steel tray containing five metal jerry cans. This is the ideal way to carry liquids because any drips are securely contained, avoiding damage from leaks. The tray is easy to remove for emptying and cleaning too. Further up again is a configurable shelf and another two special shelves for removable plastic containers.

Unusual but effective solutions: sideways-opening drawers

One of the racking sections on the right of the van is occupied by a set of metal drawers arranged in a unique configuration: the top two drawers open “normally” towards the centre of the van. The drawers underneath are installed in a separate cabinet and open towards the side door to permit access to contents from the ground outside the van. The drawer cabinet fixed to the bulkhead serves the same purpose and provides a total of eight drawers, all of which can be opened from outside the van.

How to work without a dedicated work area

This Sprinter has not been equipped with a dedicated work area but nevertheless boasts two strong, stable work surfaces:

  • a fold-away vice bench with a patented support that extends and retracts automatically on opening and closing
  • the top of the sideways-opening drawer cabinet at the side door, which is covered by a panel of marble-look plywood and served from above by a multi-purpose shelf

Accessories and bright ideas for a door and window fitter

In every Syncro van conversion, the accessories are chosen and customised to meet the needs of the user.

This Sprinter for a door and window fitter is fitted with:

  • Cargo retaining accessories: two sections of milled rail are recessed into the floor liner for use with vertical cargo bars or hook and strap lashing systems; a bar rack with strap is installed on the floor behind the sideways-opening drawer cabinet; and the rear doors are fitted with Syncroblock bars with attachments and straps for carrying a step ladder and a trolley.
  • Cleaning accessories: an essential paper roll holder and a handwash kit with water container and tap have been added to this van too.
  • Lighting accessories: a set of LED ceiling lights ensures uniform lighting throughout the interior.
  • A van hoist near the right rear door allows heavy items to be lifted and lowered in safety. The hoist is securely fixed to the van’s body by means of a vertical post and is equipped with a remotely controlled 12V motor. Lifting capacity is up to 200 kg. When folded away, the hoist takes up very little space.
