A Fiat Ducato L2 H2 for a plumbing and ventilation service

How to turn your van into a mobile workshop: the example of a Fiat Ducato

Any commercial vehicle can be converted into a mobile workshop that perfectly matches its owner’s requirements. All you need is:

  • a fully customised design
  • the right combination of storage spaces and work areas
  • a smart choice of accessories to enhance functionality

This page illustrates a mobile workshop designed by Syncro System for a 2006 MY Fiat Ducato L2 H2. The business that owns the van installs and services civil and industrial plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In this transformation, racking has been installed only on the two side walls and the bulkhead, rear doors and roof have been used to secure and transport tools and materials in a safe, orderly manner.

Order is the keyword for this mobile workshop. The aim of the project was precisely to have – and keep – cargo in perfect order so as to save time and money and gain in professionalism!

Let’s see, one by one, the steps that Syncro took to transform this vehicle.

Interior liners

This is the first step in any racking project: the van's interior needs to be protected against dents, scratches and spillages.

How can this be achieved? Using Syncro’s custom-made, pre-shaped and pre-drilled liners and panelling!

The floor of this Fiat Ducato L2 H2 is covered with a marble-look plywood floor liner with steel edge protectors at the doors. These prevent water and dirt from entering the walkable liner, spoiling the plywood or even damaging the sheet metal floor beneath it. The same marble-look plywood material covers the bulkhead, where specially shaped panels are used to follow the contours of the bodywork. The walls and doors are lined with painted steel panels.

Everything at your fingertips in the Ducato’s work area

It’s easy to see where the work area is in this Ducato for system installations. All the equipment needed for maintenance, repairs and adjustments is concentrated along the left side.

The racking here is made up of two columns side by side. Near the rear doors are:

  • a floor-level compartment with a lift-up door
  • five metal drawers with non-slip mats and internal dividers
  • a marble-look plywood workbench with a vice and a raised rear edge to prevent you having to search for nuts, bolts and spare parts that have slipped down behind the racking; this work surface is well lit by an LED tube light fixed to a body cross-member
  • a pull-out bench with a pipe vice.

The column towards the front of the cargo compartment consists of:

A full-length top tray is installed over both columns to provide useful storage for long objects.

How many containers do you want in your van? Just say a number…

Then there is the storage section. The racking on the right of this Fiat Ducato is designed to contain a quantity of spare parts, fasteners, accessories and consumables worthy of any warehouse, safely and in perfect order.

A total of 58 VisionBox containers are carried on eight open shelves, mounted with their flanges facing up and fitted with special frames. These containers come in different models and sizes, and internal space dividers can even be used to form multiple compartments. You really can get everything in!

At the bottom of the racking is another floor-level compartment with a lift-up door.

Cargo retaining accessories and more besides: how to make your Ducato more functional

The bulkhead is equipped only with cargo retaining accessories to keep the space as versatile as possible. Two Syncroblock slider bars have been installed and equipped, one with five movable telescopic hooks, and one with a hook and strap lashing system.

A fire extinguisher holder, a paper roll holder and a first aid kit have been fixed to the rear-facing side panel of the right-side racking.

Two spray can racks and a metal storage pocket have been installed on the left rear door. The interior of the cargo compartment is illuminated by LED tube lamps under the roof.

Don’t forget the roof! the Ducato’s roof rack

What’s left? The roof! There is plenty of room inside a van like this Fiat Ducato L2 H2, but if you still need more or want to carry particularly bulky equipment outside, Syncro has a range of custom-made roof racks to choose from.

In this case, the customer selected a complete roof rack consisting of cross-bars, a rear loading roller and side fences. The front cross-bar is special , because it is fitted with Syncro’s exclusive Ultrasilent noise-reducing rubber profile!
