A comparison of two Ducatos for electricians

Solutions for electricians compared: Syncro racking in two Ducatos

How come Syncro System’s racking solutions are so different one from the other? Vans owned by people who do the same job must surely be identical or nearly? The vans may be, but the racking systems are almost always very different! Certain aspects may be identical, of course, simply because they satisfy needs common to everybody who works in the same profession, but the overall layout always reflects the owner’s personality and the way they work. And two personalities are never the same!

On this page we compare two 2006 MY Fiat Ducatos. Though different in size (the one on the left is an L2 H1, that on the right an L3 H2), both belong to businesses that provide the same service – installing and maintaining electrical systems.

The way the racking and interior space is arranged is completely different, as we shall see!

Interior liners: always recommended

Electrician or plumber, door and window fitter or carpenter... whatever your trade, you always need one thing. Liners.

Syncro’s experts ALWAYS advise you to protect the interior of your van. This simple precaution greatly extends your vehicle’s working life, reducing maintenance requirements and saving you a great deal of time and money.

Let’s look at these two vans.

Ducato L2 H1: The floor is protected by a marble-look plywood liner, with protective metal profiles on all exposed edges and recessed steel cups to permit access to the vehicle’s original anchor rings. No other panelling has been added. The doors, walls and bulkhead of this van have been left bare. Only the OEM panels on the bottom of the doors are present.

Ducato L3 H2: In this van, the floor is covered by a resin-coated plywood liner and the doors and side walls are fully protected by strong steel panels. The only exception is found in the workshop area where the right-hand wall is covered by a perforated tool rack panel.

Even the left-hand wheel arch, which would otherwise be exposed, has been covered in with a steel top panel and marble-look plywood at the front.

The left of the Ducato, two different approaches to using space

Both electricians have installed racking on both sides of their Ducatos, but the way in which space is used is very different. In the Ducato L2 H1, the left side is entirely occupied by racking, complemented by accessories and equipment. In the Ducato L3 H2, the racking is concentrated in the front half, while the back half is equipped with accessories for securing cargo.

Ducato L2 H1: The lower model actually boasts a more complex racking system! At floor level we have a compartment with a lift-up door and, alongside it, a compartment with a lashing strap for case transport. Further up are six case trays with Syncro’s patented latch mechanism, four metal drawers, one shelf with Profibox removable containers, three configurable shelves including a full-length one at the top, a secure locker and, at the same level, a shelf with a top-pivot door. The rear-facing side panel is particularly well equipped, with a spray can rack, a pull-out bench with a metal vice, a tray supporting an Ecoflow power station, the corresponding battery charger, and a paper roll holder.

Ducato L3 H2: This van is far larger inside, but more space has been left free for carrying spares, equipment and machinery. The racking, concentrated near the bulkhead, includes a shuttle-type case compartment, a small floor-level compartment with a lift-up door and five shelves of different sizes, all with non-slip mats and the possibility of adding space dividers. The configuration also includes two shelves with removable Visionbox plastic containers and four rows of MultiBox cabinets providing a total of 10 transparent containers. At the top is a full-length tray with a fold-down door at the rear, supported by an aluminium frame near the rear doors. A galvanized steel rail with a lashing strap and ratchet tensioner has been installed on the empty section of wall.

The right side: compact storage or work area?

The two electricians have chosen completely different solutions for the right of their Ducatos, reflecting their different working practices.

Ducato L2 H1: In this van, the priority was to save space while still enjoying a well-stocked store of spare parts and consumables . The right side is therefore equipped with 40 tilting and removable transparent containers in ultra-compact Multibox cabinets. These vary in depth in order to follow the contours of the bodywork, making full use of all available space without protruding into the centre of the van.

Ducato L3 H2: The owner of this van wanted a practical workshop area, with a marble-look plywood work surface. The racking supporting it consists of a floor-level compartment with a lift-up door, four case trays and four metal drawers. With the addition of a vice, a spray can rack and a large tool rack panel on the wall, the user has a fully functional work space, with everything at his fingertips.

The bulkhead: racking or accessories

Racking is installed on the bulkhead only in the Ducato L3 H2. Here, three shelves, two enclosed by lift-up doors and one left open at the top, complement the limited storage space available on the side walls and offer the added advantage of being easily accessible from the side door.

The owner of the Ducato L2 H1, on the other hand, chose to equip his bulkhead with a solution that has proved extremely popular with Syncro customers. He asked us to install two parallel sections of Syncroblock bar, the lower equipped with hooks and lashing straps, the higher equipped with cable holders. The smaller volume of this van is compensated for by a generous and varied range of storage containers and accessories, including a full-length top tray suspended from the roof and an extra cable holder on the rear door.

For everything else… there’s always the roof!

The layout of these two Ducatos is very different but highly functional in both cases. To carry anything that does not fit neatly inside, both customers decided to use the roof, as electricians so often do.

The two vans are fitted with Ultrasilent roof racks consisting of cross bars, rear loading rollers and side fences. A damped descent, assisted lift ladder slide is installed on both.

The Ducato L2 H1 has also been equipped with a pipe carrier.
